Our first session was two years ago when we photographed Rylan’s big sister, Sydney, as a newborn (Sydney is so grown-up with her cute blond pigtails! Mom did a great job keeping Sydney pre-occupied with lots of marshmallows for this session. Rylan was such a trooper. She pretty much let us put her in any position (including a basket!) and never even fussed. We had so much fun visiting and capturing some fun family shots. Ella (the oldest) gave us a hard time with her “fake” smile, but watching mom and dad reenact the smile made us giggle… (they begged us not to include it online… oops, sorry! It is too funny not to include.)

This little cutie was great to work with. I will have to admit I was light challenged on this shoot. For some reason I was just having an off day and couldn’t get my lighting just the way I wanted it the entire shoot. Combine that with a strobe that just wasn’t recycling fast enough despite fresh batteries and I was tempted to just reschedule. But, despite all that I had to take advantage of Sonali’s good mood and charm so there was no way I was going to put my camera down just yet. We had a couple of breaks for wardrobe changes and meals, models do have to eat you know. At one wardrobe change Deepa & Amish (mom & dad) put her in this one outfit that was a onesie with “Made in America with Indian Parts” printed on the front of it. I couldn’t stop laughing…that was the neatest idea I have seen in a long time, I love it! One of these days I have a feeling that image will appear at Sonali’s wedding. It’s just a classic.

Every parent has a nickname for their child. Sometimes these names change over time and as the kid gets older. This little one gained the name from his dad early on and it stuck. You know it’s catchy when even the photographer catches it and starts calling him by his nickname.

With portraits it usually takes a few frames before someone gets used to having a camera pointed in their face. With kids it sometimes can take more than just a few. We often plan on the first 10-20 minutes of a shoot will be spent establishing a rapport with our subject or subjects and getting them used to the camera and my movements all around them. Not the case with this little guy. Right out of the gate early this morning the first frame was awesome and SuperBlake continued to “work it” until he finally just got tired of the whole thing.
